Bud Kennedy at the Star-Telegram reports that Texas Wesleyan University has come under fire in recent weeks for its institution of a prayer room for Saudi students. “A little meeting room in the fitness center” that was reserved following requests by some international students who wanted “someplace of their own to pray,” the prayer room prompted some conservative websites to accuse TWU of “submitting to shari’a.” Others, such as the University’s campus chaplain, have been significantly less critical and even supportive of the new space, claiming it’s “meant to show hospitality and that Wesleyan is open and tolerant of other faith traditions.” According to the article, more than 70,000 Saudi students nationwide attend U.S. colleges “under a 2005 goodwill scholarship program set up by President George W. Bush and King Abdullah after 9-11.”
